Something else can happen in hyperspace. The characters reminisce. Thus, this quiet interval between actions on planetary surfaces is itself interrupted by several action sequences.
Kossara remembers:
Trohdwyr's death on Diomedes;
her reception by the resident and his wife;
her and Trohdwyr's travels on Diomedes;
their meeting with human beings claiming to be Esperancians;
her conversation with Bodin Miyatovich at his hunting lodge.
Another reminiscence is Flandry's meeting with Aycharaych on Talwin but he remembered that while he was having sex with Susette on Diomedes back in Chapter IX.
By the end of XII, all significant past events have been recalled and reclaimed and Flandry and Kossara are engaged. I have just reread what happened to Bond and Tracy immediately after their wedding and now continue to reread A Knight Of Ghosts And Shadows in full knowledge of what will happen to Flandry and Kossara even before they can be married.

And, unlike Bond, Flandry did not allow grief and shock to make him fall apart, not until the immediate crisis had passed, including the revelations about his son. Then he could finally grieve properly.
