Old Books In Dead Languages

Orion Shall Rise, CHAPTER THIRTEEN, 3.

Only scholars are able to read and understand the books kept in the office of the Captain of Skyholm:

a French Bible
Holberg comedies
Villon poems
Goethe poems

The carpet is from Devon.

That is the French of our period, not any of its descendants in the Maurai period. See the image.

I used to hear about "Gurter" and read about "Go-Eth," then realized that they were the same guy.

Kaor, Paul!

I sort of, kinda, have a French Bible myself: the New Jerusalem Bible, descending from the original Jerusalem Bible in French. And besides the books kept by the recently deceased Captain of Skyholm in his office, there was probably a library elsewhere.

I've heard of Villon, Goethe, and Austen, but not of Castelo Branco.

Ad astra! Sean
