At least one of our four viewpoint characters does not survive the hostilities. Vanna accompanies a Mong army as a chaplain. While traveling, she sees that:
"An eagle hovered up yonder." (2, p. 388)
A by now familiar sight. See Eagles With Golden Wings.
The next thing that they see in the sky is an enemy rocket. Then:
"The sky exploded." (2, p. 389)
- which it has done before. See Minamoto And Laure.
However, this explosion is fatal. Its effects are gruesomely described and Vanna dies chanting about Gaea, peace and beauty.

Tragic, indeed! And I doubt any half measures I've thought of, such as using that nuclear missile in an attempt to block the mountain pass the Mong army was approaching would have worked.
