the outer narrator in The Time Machine;
Robert Anderson in Poul Anderson's There Will Be Time;
Service agents in James Blish's The Quincunx Of Time.
We receive accounts of futures that we cannot enter. Robert Heinlein's DD Harriman put mankind into space but could not go there himself until after his retirement - and then he died on the Moon.
We envy genuine time travellers who can go into the future and return but that is the most improbable of all sf speculations. We all accept that we are not going to meet anyone who has come from the future and is able to return then.
