The Exaltationists, based in Machu Picchu in 1610, would have sent some of their number to steal Atahuapla's ransom in 1533 and carry it to their base in 1610:
"'As isolated as Machu Picchu is at present, it will not be noticeably affected by changes in the near past - for instance, by such a detail as Atahualpa's ransom unaccountably disappearing one night.'" (p. 665)
Although Machu Picchu will not be affected immediately, it will nevertheless exist in a different timeline where the ransom did disappear and where consequences are propagating from that disappearance. Thus, any Exaltationists who remain at the base will be left in a deleted timeline. Those who did travel into the previous century to steal the ransom will carry it to a Machu Picchu where their base does not exist.
