After returning from the Time Patrol Academy in the Oligocene period to 1954, Manse Everard travels from 1954 to 1947 to 1894 to 464 to 1894 to 1944, then back to 1954. Coincidentally, four fours:
464
1894
1944
1954
The story concludes:
"Everard climbed weakly aboard the hopper. And when he got off again, a decade had passed." (6, p. 53)
He is "weak" because he has just met a Danellian. Only a decade separates the London blitz from Everard's mid-1950s career change. Everard feels the weight of that decade and more when he gets off the timecycle.
The dystopian The Time Machine was published in 1895. The utopian News From Nowhere was published in 1890, thus preceding The Time Machine but its visit to the future is only a dream. These two works make the 1890s an appropriate setting for Time Patrol milieu HQ.

Kaor, Paul!
I also think Everard felt "weak" not only from the shock of meeting a Danellian but also from his totally unexpected promotion to Unattached rank. A double whammy!
Ad astra! Sean
