Of course, the asteroids should be explored and mined! And colonized if gravity control a la real world "gyrogravitics" makes that possible. But I still believe people will want to colonize Mars, because planets have advantages asteroids do not. Mars has more room for a large population and I think it could be terraformed.
It might even be possible to terraform Venus, as discussed by Jerry Pournelle in his article "The Big Rain" (a homage to Anderson!), collected in A STEP FARTHER OUT. Plus, Anderson speculated on how it might be possible to terraform Earth's Moon in "Strange Bedfellows."
