When Everard informs everyone at the lodge of the temporal upheaval, the booming wind outside is audible. It is:
"...the sound of autumn on its way south." (p. 299)
- and Everard imagines that its cold seeps inward.
The end of the year approaches simultaneously with the chronological catastrophe that might be the end of future civilizations. Everything is always timed just right in Poul Anderson's works.
And it is time for me to be out of here for today.
