Danellians And The Patrol

By the end of the Time Patrol series, the Danellians know that there have been at least three timelines without any Danellians in them but that nevertheless the Patrol which they had founded kept working and restored the preferred timeline.

Danellians and Time Patrol are comparable to Arisians and Galactic Patrol and also to the Guardians of the Universe and the Green Lantern Corps. As far as I remember, the GLC kept working during a crisis when the Guardians had been somehow immobilized or neutralized. EE Smith's Arisians and Galactic Patrol I have no time for although a Lensman once showed up in Poul Anderson's Old Phoenix.

OTOH, why should humans work for a successor species? Just sayin'. 8-).

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

An intriguing question! Why work for successors who plan to dump US on that proverbial ash heap of history?

Kaor, Mr. Stirling and Sean!

Well, the Danellians are our descendants (but do we and the Time Patrolmen know this for certain?). Do the Danellians plan to dump us on the ash heap of history, or is that something which happened in the Danellians’ past, or did all humans who wanted to have their children become Danellians? Did the Danellians arise by random mutation, or genetic engineering, or something beyond our understanding? Since an “Era of Oneness” supposedly preceded the Danellians, does that mean that a united human race agreed to do whatever ended up being done to become Danellians?

Besides, what’s the alternative? If history takes a “wrong” (anti-Danellian timeline) turn, that could mean the human race never developing systematic science and high technology, never getting off this rock, and eventually becoming extinct because of some misfortune or another. So I think I’d be on the side of the Time Patrol against the Exaltationists or against the alpha and beta timelines of THE SHIELD OF TIME.

Best Regards,
Nicholas

Kaor, Nicholas!

I was being perhaps a bit facetious! I daresay the Danellians didn't actually DO anything to old fogy humans like us. It's probable they arose from both genetic engineering and a chance mutation during that Era of Oneness, both of which would favor their descendants over old stock humans.

I have to agree with your second paragraph. For different reasons, both the alpha and beta timelines of "Amazement of the World" were very undesirable. So,despite some misgivings, I would have to accept the timeline leading to the Danellians.
