In The Johannine Cathedral

Operation Chaos, XXVI.

The Johannine Cathedral library includes:

The Handbook of Alchemy and Metaphysics
The Encyclopedia Arcanorum
bound copies of Mind

Secrecy works against itself. Challenged by an adept while trespassing in the Cathedral, Matuchek passes himself off as a Johannine operative on a secret mission, thus gaining further information from the adept.

Marmiadon tries to summon an angel and thinks that he sees one whereas Matuchek has his fourth encounter with the Adversary and thinks:

"...this doubtless isn't the first time the Adversary's made an instrument of people who honestly believe they're serving God. What about Jonathan Edwards, back in old New England?" (p. 205)

Honesty, necessary but insufficient, must be accompanied by humility and self-criticism.

Kaor, Paul!

I'm also rereading OPERATION CHAOS and have gotten to the point where Steven was preparing to penetrate deeper into the Johannine cathedral. But not yet to where he had that encounter with the adept.

I think you could have mentioned that the Johannine adept was both AGED and blind. But still a very formidable and dangerous person. Fortunately, Matuchek concluded the adept had just a touch of senility. With sight and if still in the full vigor of his prime, that adept would almost certainly have been impossible to be fooled by Steven.

Sean,

Sure. I was just concentrating on the secrecy working against itself aspect of the situation.

Paul.

I'm not quite sure that was the case here. It seems a fortunate accident for Steven that the adept was both blind and had a touch of senility.
