Even in war, fights are usually the exception rather than the rule. One of the novelties of WW1 was more or less continuous combat for many months at a time (even a "quiet sector" had continuous "wastage" from snipers and artillery) and it's no accident that it produced so much mental trauma.

Yes, LONG spells of continuous combat was one of the novelties of WW I. And "shell shock" and PTSD were among those forms of mental trauma you mentioned.
