Fallen Empires And Mental Sciences

At the end of Isaac Asimov's Second Foundation, the Galactic Empire has fallen and its capital city-planet, Trantor, has been sacked but the Second Foundation is on schedule to fulfill Seldon's Plan of a Second Empire ruled by mental scientists.

In Poul Anderson's "The Chapter Ends," the First Empire fell and its capital, Sol City, was sacked long ago but now psychotecnicians administer a Galactic civilization.

In Anderson's Technic History, Dominic Flandry anticipates the Fall of the Terran Empire and the sack of Archopolis but post-Flandry stories, set long after these events, show subsequent interstellar civilizations.

In Anderson's Virgin Planet, Davis Bertram and three women companions escape from Freetoon when it is attacked by an alliance of other towns but I find less to post about in Andersonian action-adventure sequences.

Kaor, Paul!

And the beginning of Chapter 22 of Asimov's FOUNDATION AND EMPIRE (not SECOND FOUNDATION) gives us one of the few times he rose to elegiac writing. Reminiscent of Flandry's anxious reflections about the future fall of Terra and destruction of Admiralty Center in Chapter VI of WE CLAIM THESE STARS.

Oh well, I enjoy Anderson's action adventure sequences! And one thing I remember about them in VIRGIN PLANET was how shocked Davis Bertram was by the violence and brutality of war--and of how casually Corporal Maiden Barbara Whitley took that. War was just a fact of life for her.

Ad astra! Sean
