I am trying to clarify the difference between family and choth. In "Wingless," the Weathermaker Choth is an extended household where a tall stone tower houses the core families. That is clear enough. The choth is a single household but not a single family.

Arinnian does not live in his choth, Stormgate, but attends it regularly and especially at times of need - like an impending war. To be with the choth, he flies to Lythran's aerie. While he is there, food will be provided from the family stores to which he regularly contributes, then it will be ferried by gravsled to the Khruath rendezvous point. The regional Khruath is attended by any eligible adults, not just by Stormgate members.

In the dining hall, Ainnian sits with younger Ythrians, then joins Eyath when she has asked permission to leave of her parents, Lythran and Blawsa. Hloch has already told us that their son, thus Eyath's brother, Tariat, is Wyvan of Stormgate, as Ayan was in an earlier age.

In this case, an old stone tower houses not the core families of the choth but the senior members of the family. My impression is that Stormgate is a larger choth with members in more than one household and also individual members like Arinnian living separately.
