The Shield Of Time.
I said here that Everard brilliantly defeats the Exaltationists at the temple. He kills one and disables another who is then arrested by other Patrol agents summoned by Everard. However, Everard and his colleagues must then proceed into the city where, again, they kill one and capture another. So is the defeat of the Exaltationists completed in the city? The arrival of the agents at the Temple would have sounded an alarm in Raor's/Theonis' house, warning her and Sauvo to escape through time. To prevent this from happening, Everard leads the attack in the city before he had attacked the two Exaltationists at the temple. Thus, in chronological order, the defeat of the Exaltationists is completed at the temple. Sauvo was already dead and Raor captured before Everard attacked Draganizu and Buleni at the temple. Everard did not know that at the time but he planned accordingly when he realized that he had created an opportunity to prevent the escape of the last two Exaltationists.

I would have thought that the Exaltationists were smart enough to figure out that no historical change would be safe from the Patrol, because the Patrol exists in its entirety -before- human life begins.
The Exaltationists realize that, having made a historical change, they must still keep themselves hidden from any Patrol agents returning from the further past.
Another point is that most such Patrol agents return to the Danellian timeline, not to any alternative.
Kaor, Mr. Stirling! You and Paul keep making points I've never thought of saying! And I respect that. Ad astra! Sean
Kaor, Mr. Stirling and Paul!
I think some Patrol agents probably got permanently stranded in "deleted" timelines.
Ad astra! Sean
Sean,
We are told that some agents get left in the Carthaginian timeline.
Paul.
