Eliminating The Impossible

Sherlock Holmes's principle that, when the impossible has been eliminated, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth is cited both in:

"Time Patrol," the first Time Patrol story, by Poul Anderson;

"The Obvious Factor," the sixth Black Widower story, by Isaac Asimov.

In "Time Patrol," the citing of the principle serves only to identify Holmes, who remains unnamed, to the reader whereas Asimov is making a point about Testimony And Evidence. See also previous blog references to David Hume. (Scroll down.)

Kaor, Paul!

All the same, I now wondered how often real world detectives, private or official, have used that famous dictum of Sherlock Holmes.

Ad astra! Sean
