The Man Who Counts, XVIII.
"Wace lost himself, contemplating the terrible beauty of death winged and disciplined." (p. 262)
For "terrible beauty" in a poem by W.B. Yates and in another novel by Poul Anderson, see:
1914-'18 means World War I.
October 1917 means the Russian Revolution.
Easter 1916 means the Irish Easter Rising.
Yates encapsulated the significance of Easter 1916 and created a phrase that I heard quoted in Dublin and have so far far found twice in Poul Anderson's sf.

Kaor, Paul!
That "terrible beauty of death winged and disciplined" reminded me of Ythrian sky dances. And they must have had similar battle formations for combat in the sky on Ythri.
Ad astra! Sean
