The Technic History: The Original Reading Order

Last thoughts before turning in with a long walk along Lancaster Canal planned for tomorrow:

Poul Anderson's History of Technic Civilization is a uniquely structured future history series. For the purposes of the present post, I focus only on:

The Polesotechnic League Tetralogy
Trader To The Stars
The Trouble Twisters
Satan's World
Mirkheim

Two Companion Volumes
The People of The Wind
The Earth Book Of Stormgate

Reading Experience:

the Tetralogy ends as the League declines;

we think that we have seen the last of van Rijn, Falkayn, Adzel and Chee Lan;

next, we read an excellent novel set generations later on Falkayn's human-Ythrian colony planet of Avalon as it successfully resists the Terran Empire that will later be defended by Dominic Flandry;

then, the omnibus Earth Book collection -

is compiled, edited and introduced by Hloch of Stormgate Choth on Avalon;

begins by telling us how Ythri was discovered and Avalon explored;

restores all the League characters, even incorporating the earliest van Rijn stories and an account of Adzel's student days on Earth;

also references Christopher Holm from The People Of The Wind;

describes how Falkayn, Adzel and Chee Lan helped the Merseians, Flandry's later enemies;

ends by recounting how the Avalonian islands and main continent were settled.

A perfect package.

Kaor, Paul!

One important point stressed by Sandra Miesel about the war between the Empire and the Domain was that it was fortunate for the Empire that Avalon was not annexed by Terra. Because this was to later enable an agent of the Domain from Avalon (who was also working for the Empire) to help thwart dangerous Merseian intrigues in THE DAY OF THEIR RETURN. Which very likely would not have happened if Avalon had been annexed.

Ad astra! Sean
