Technic History Known Space Parallels

(i) An early period of interplanetary exploration, Niven's in the last quarter of the twentieth century, Anderson's in the mid-twenty-first.

(ii) Two originally independent series linked to form a future history series.

(iii) Other periods before, between or after the two main periods.

(iv) Series characters in different periods.

(v) Different versions of a hyperdrive.

(vi) Imperialistic aliens: kzinti; Merseians.

(vii) Previous interstellar civilizations: Slavers; Chereionites. In both cases, their legacies are harmful.

(viii) The kzinti were introduced to make a single point, how to transform peaceful technology into weapons, but then became major continuing villains. Aycharaych was introduced to make a single point, how to lie to a telepath, but then became a major continuing villain. (The kzinti telepath was inadvertently deceived because he thought that the newly discovered spacefaring species was unarmed.)

(ix) Both the Worlds/Ringworld sequence and the Flandry period are nine volumes in length.

Kaor, Paul!

More exacxtly, "The Saturn Game" shows us the Solar System being explored by the mid 21st century. I would argue that the FTL hyperdrive of the Technic series was invented somewhat later, perhaps around AD 2100 or shortly afterwards.

The First and Second Grand Surveys probably occurred in the early to mid 2100's. And the Breakup began in that period as well, as many people, fed up with Earth for one reason or another, left the Solar System to colonize other worlds. Last, my guess is the Polesotechnic League took form around AD 2200.

Ad astra! Sean
