Remember that the Earth Book is part of Volumes I-III of The Technic Civilization Saga (see image).
"A Little Knowledge" is in the Earth Book because:
"It shows a kindred spirit." (p. 291)
- and because it is about two planets that are galactically close to Avalon.
"Day of Burning" and "Lodestar" are included because they are previously unknown stories of "...the Founder-to-be...," (p. 316) David Falkayn. "Lodestar," in particular, helps to explain his reserve on the contentious issue of Mirkheim. (I mean the planet, Mirkheim, not the novel, Mirkheim.)
This survey has demonstrated that the Earth Book is much more of a unity than I had thought it to be. All hail Poul Anderson.

Kaor, Paul!
But the truly ghastly covers some enemy of Poul Anderson chose for Volumes IV to VI of THE TECHNIC CIVILIZATION SAGA makes me angry! The covers makes Dominic Flandy look like a goon whose only interest was in being chased by naked bimbos!
Who would dare show himself in public carrying a book with such awful covers???
Ad astra! Sean
