Erannath of Stormgate Choth, confined in a cave on Aeneas, reminisces:
wing-free, he wandered across all Avalon in his youth;
he saw "'...storm-dawns over seas and snowpeaks!'" (16, p. 195);
he hunted a spathodont with a spear;
he remembers winds across plains;
he became a tramp spacehand, often staying for a while on other planets;
he married Hlirr on a planet with rainbow rings and silver oceans;
they returned to Avalon and raised a family, now grown;
he is an anthropologist (spy) but, it turns out, for Empire as well as for Domain.

I think it makes sense to think Erannath first STUDIED to become an anthropologist after returning to Avalon and only LATER becoming an intelligence agent for the Domain. I get the impression he was becoming fairly elderly, altho still hale, in THE DAY OF THEIR RETURN.
