Poul Anderson, Tau Zero, CHAPTERs 17-18.
Remember when "the Big Deep" just meant the thirty two light years between Sol and Beta Virginis? See also "Communication in the Big Deep," here.
Now the Leonora Christine is moving so fast that it cannot brake enough to come to rest in the new clan. The only option is to accelerate even more in the hope of eventually finding a clan or sequence of clans dense enough to enable the ship to decelerate enough to enter a galaxy and look for a planet.
The reader welcomes this because by now we want to learn how fast and far the ship can travel whereas the crew fear that they will die of old age while still traveling. The ship traverses the second clan in two days, then crosses the hundred million light years to a third clan in a week. There, she accelerates more...
OK. That is as far as we go today and I need to check what is happening to Shadow in American Gods.

Kaor, Paul!
And, I'm expecting any moment information reaching the crew of "Leonora Christian" serious enough to make them decide to keep on accelerating!
Sean
With the huge-but-largely-neutralized acceleration PA describes throughout T0, PA combines the features or a Bussard ramjet with those of a reactionless drive (http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/reactionlessdrive.php)like his Zero-Zero Drive in Starfarers or the Agoric Drive in Time Lag(?).

Kaor, Keith!
Reactionless drive? Dang! I need to drop by that Atomics Rocket website to look up some stuff like that.

Thanks, Sean. As Ken Burnside said:
"Friends Don't Let Friends Use Reactionless Drives In Their Universes."
(You get cheap relativistic planet-crackers.)

Kaor, Keith!
Or corny, groan worthy jokes and puns! (Smiles)
