The problem with Aycharaych's (scroll down) telepathy is not that his brain detects emanations from other brains but that he instantly understands any other being's surface thoughts, including their linguistic and conceptual content. William Dexter presents a less implausible account of universal telepathy:
"'...I can see the mind of any creature. Sometimes, the picture I see means nothing to me...but always there is a picture, even if it is not complete or not understandable. The Vulcanids [scroll down] - I could sometimes see their thoughts. The little creatures on...' and here he gave the almost unpronounceable name for Ganymede '...I could see their thoughts very often.'"
-William Dexter, Children Of The Void (New York, 1966), X, p. 53.
However, if a being had completely different sense organs, then even its mental "pictures" or the equivalent would not be recognizable as such.

Kaor, Paul!
I've been wanting to say this, but in Chapter 20 of THE DAY OF THEIR RETURN we see Poul Anderson trying to rationalize the telepathic powers of Aycharaych. Maybe the explanation suggested by Anderson is not plausible, but at least he tried!
