When it is silent on the second floor of the Tavern Called Swampman's Ease, Flandry hears:
the lapping of the oily canal water under the Tavern;
far thunder over the jungle;
an argument in the Tavern;
the loser splashing into the canal - and swimming away;
music recontinued.
Do I have a point here? When we and our immediate environment are quiet, we hear - background sounds and thoughts. Flandry is thinking about how to respond to a vital question.

Kaor, Paul!
And other times the losers in tavern fights are killed and the corpses dumped into the canal. And Biocontrol and its witless "Guards" wouldn't care!
