Some Details In Satan's World

Poul Anderson, Satan's World IN Anderson, David Falkayn: Star Trader (Riverdale, NY, 2010), Chapter IV.

Adzel is meditating. To get his attention, Chee Lan must "...untrance..." (p. 363) him. Different practices are called "meditation." In zazen, we are alert, not entranced.

Do you know what they say about us? There is an old cliche that all human beings look alike but Adzel and Chee Lan are too experienced to believe this. (p. 368) I should hope not! They are looking at Falkayn's current beautiful girlfriend, not at van Rijn.

Van Rijn "...did not own the town..." (p. 382). No, only "...seventy three percent of the industry." (ibid.) That is more than enough ownership for anyone. The mayor and skipper of the floating town of Delfinburg are very deferential to him.

Sorry, folks. Dental appointment. More later.

Kaor, Paul!

Amusingly, Harry Turtledove also used the cliche about aliens unable to distinguish one human from another in his WORLDWAR books. Most of the aliens who invaded Earth during an alternate WW II thought the "Big Uglies," as they called humans, looked like each other.

And unlike some men in similarly powerful positions, Old Nick did not abuse his power. He was at heart good natured and easy going.

Good luck at your dentist appointment!
