The Protean Enemy Returns

"In Gaia's and Alpha's kind laired no ancient beast, Christian thought. The human elements in them were long since absorbed, tamed, transfigured."
-Poul Anderson, Genesis (New York, 2001), Part Two, VII, 9, p. 194.

Thus, as in Anderson's Brain Wave, the "old and protean enemy" (see here), has been overcome. However, that enemy returns when Gaia re-creates humanity. Wayfarer tells her:

"'You want to perpetuate war, tyranny, superstition, misery, instincts in mortal combat with each other, the ancient ape, the ancient beast of prey.'" (XII, p. 245)

How she replies and whether her reply is adequate will have to be left until after the blogger has had a few hours sleep.

Kaor, Paul!

And very similar issues were discussed in the HARVEST OF STARS books.
