Beyond This World

Poul Anderson, "Death and the Knight" IN Anderson, Time Patrol (Riverdale, NY, 2010), pp. 737-765.

"Mute, Hugues went off between the men. As he walked, he gripped a small crucifix that hung about his neck, symbol and source of help from beyond this world."
-PARIS, TUESDAY, 10 OCTOBER 1307, p. 746.

Symbol, yes. Source?

"'Marlow has a miniature radiophone in a crucifix he always carries. Nobody would take that away from him. Once he was locked up alone, he called the milieu base and told them his problem.'"
-SAN FRANCISCO, THURSDAY, 8 MARCH 1990, p. 750.

The radiophone can communicate only across space, not time, but the milieu base contacts 1850-2000 milieu HQ in London, 1890-1910. Someone in that HQ contacts an agent in 1990 called Nick who phones Everard in San Francisco.

Hugh Marlow's crucifix is another Chekov's gun.

The headings in "Death and the Knight" are the most comprehensive yet, identifying place, day of the week, day of the month and year. Unfortunately, 8 March 1990 is that last date of record in Manse Everard's career.

He'd have to assume a new identity soon anyway. And probably a different base year to live in.
