Fire Time, VIII.
Naqsan and human colonists clash on Mundamar. The northern quarter of the planet becomes the independent human Republic of Eleutheria which overruns and fortifies another continent, expelling Naqsans. In Gunnar Heim's opinion, Eleutherians and their Terrestrial backers have by now made such big investments in the conquered continent that it will be inconvenient for them to withdraw and therefore they falsely claim that retaining that territory is:
"...vital to their security. Crap. Even though most of them sincerely believe this, crap." (p. 99)
Strong words. Also, a familiar scenario.
Mundamar has different environments which the two species could peacefully colonize without coming into conflict. There is an example of peaceful biracial colonization of a planet in Poul Anderson's Technic History.
Heim, a privateer in the previous volume, speaks for peace here in a different situation.
A medals-wearing D Day veteran has just advised people in the Middle East to "...talk peace, not war."

Kaor, Paul!
It takes both sides in a war desiring an end to the conflict before peace might be possible. And Hamas has no interest in admitting defeat. It's goal remains the same: extermination of the Jews and the destruction of Israel.
Ad astra! Sean
Disagree.
The aim of eradicating Hamas is unachievable but how long can Israel be sustained in continual conflict with its neighbours and condemned by the world?
Kaor, Paul!
Disagree. Kill enough of the Hamas monsters and they will be eradicated, as they should be. Also, you overlook how "Josip's" bungling and ham handed pressure on Israel is prolonging the war and making it harder for Israel to crush Hamas. And that needless prolonging is encouraging Hezbullah (proxies of Iran!) in Lebanon to continue attacking Israel.
Israel should forget about senile "Josip's" wishes and do what needs to be done, crush Hamas as fast as possible in Rafah.
Ad astra! Sean
Sean,
I guarantee that trying to eradicate Hamas will: (i) fail; (ii) kill a lot more innocent people in the process; (iii) generate a lot more resistance to Israel. Surely this is the single basic lesson to be learned from all such conflicts?
Paul.
