"Every writer, like every other human being, is unique, partly because of the accidents of heredity, partly because of the events of his or her life, perhaps especially early life."
-Poul Anderson, Going For Infinity (New York, 2002), Introduction, pp. 11-12.
I agree:
heredity;
life events;
early life.
So I do not believe in "rebirth." Buddhist teaching is accurate insofar as:
actions have consequences;
wrong actions have bad consequences;
bad consequences can include inner guilt, regret etc and also outer repercussions.
However, we do not seem to suffer the full possible consequences of wrong actions - hopefully, just enough to learn from. And, to quote my friend, Andrea, the goddess Fortuna seems to hold sway over much of what happens, starting with the accidents of heredity.

Kaor, Paul!
Not just the Buddhists, orthodox Christians would not disagree with what you wrote here (albeit it might be rephrased and sharpened a bit).
