Mars has been on TV again.
Of the future history series that we still discuss, there are native Martians in:
Heinlein's Future History;
Anderson's Psychotechnic History;
Niven's Known Space History.
That factor alone is enough to classify these three series as "past futures." Of the three, I prefer Anderson's off-the-stage hibernating Martians.
There are two completely different meanings of the phrase, "old Mars." To learn about the Martian past, Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen study Edgar Rice Burroughs' accounts whereas we read those same texts to appreciate one of the ways in which Mars used to be imagined. To learn about the real Martian past, scientists study data from planetary probes to learn whether the water that flowed on Mars was there long enough for life to have existed. Sf writers might now speculate about the Martian past.

Kaor, Paul!
Or SF writers might now speculate about what might happen in the future if, no, WHEN humans finally colonize Mars!
And we see native Martians in Anderson's THE WAR OF TWO WORLDS and "The Martian Crown Jewels." Both of these races are not hibernators, btw.
Ad astra! Sean
