See "Would God I Were..."
"To be made honest by an act of Parliament"
See The Devil Is An Ass, text here, Wikipedia here.
"Call up the bloody Territorials."

"Worth makes man, and want of it the fellow"
You’ll find, if once the monarch acts the monk,
Or, cobbler-like, the parson will be drunk,
Worth makes the man, and want of it, the fellow;
The rest is all but leather or prunella.
-copied from Alexander Pope, Essay on Man, EPISTLE IV, here.
