Anatolians, Atalanta, An Amazon And Athena

The Golden Slave, XVII.

Flavius from the Roman Republic requests that Mithradates surrender Eodan to him and even threatens war over the issue. Mithradates opines that:

"'...nobody would hazard as rich a province as Pergamum just to capture a man.'" (p. 223)

Flavius speaks in the name of:

"'...the Senate and the people of Rome...'" (ibid.)

This is the famous "Senatus Populusque Romanus," SPQR.

Mithradates' guests:

"...clad their Anatolian bodies in Greek style..." (p. 229)

He tells them:

"'I am therefore pleased to present to you a veritable Atalanta - or an Amazon princess - or even an Athena, wise as well as valiant. Let Phryne of Hellas stand forth!'" (p. 229)

Kaor, Paul!

And, even now, the municipal gov't of Rome still uses that famous "SPQR" in its official symbols. Which is what I saw around Rome myself.

Ad astra! Sean
