A very short quiz for when Shadows Of Annihilation is published:
Which story by Edgar Rice Burroughs is Luz reading in TWO?
Which DC Comics animal character has the same name as the animal in the ERB story? (Someone out there might be able to work backwards from a DC animal to a named animal in an ERB book to the title of that book.)
A question that might be answered now:
THREE informs us of the Old Shatterhand series by Karl May. Which major fictional villain, discussed on these blogs, adopts the alias, "Shatterhand"?

Kaor, Paul!
Until I can read my own copy of SHADOWS OF ANNIHILATION, I can hardly answer the quetion about Chapter Two (I refuse to read the sample chapters of many of Stirling's books at "S.M. Stirling.com").
The only named Barsoomian animal that I know of was the Martian mastiff, or "calot," Woola.
And it was Ernst Blofeld who adopted the pseudonym "Shatterhand." Blofeld, of course, was the founder of SPECTRE, in the Bond stories.
Ad astra! Sean
Sean,
You got Blofeld right.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
But not about the named Barsoomian animal?
Ad astra! Sean
Sean,
You were not.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
Darn! I thought of Woola because of the affection the Warlord, John Carter, had for that calot!
Ad astra! Sean
There's the Martian rat... 8-).
The stories ERB is writing are beginning to diverge in the two histories, so the one you're referring to may not have the same title. It's substantially identical to a rather obscure sequel by ERB to an (undeservedly) obscure two-novella series, THE MUCKER.
Mr Stirling,
That is it as I discovered by googling.
Paul.
