Gods And Saints Of The Sea

Rogue Sword, CHAPTER III.

Djansha asked Seosseres for good winds and smooth waters and will give him a sheep if he helps and if Lucas will buy one. They can eat most of it because:

"'The gods only want certain parts.'" (p. 58)

If her gods are too far away to hear, Lucas must call on closer ones whose names she does not know. Lucas exclaims, "'Holy saints!,'" (ibid.) crosses himself, warns her against mentioning gods and says that he will get a priest to explain things to her. Djansha thinks that Lucas is a great wizard if he can go to
sea without making sacrifices.

The simplest explanation might be that St Nicholas, St Elmo or St Brendan will accept an offering of a candle in a church. While googling, I read somewhere that Brendan is also the patron saint of marine scientists.

The images show Saints Elmo, Nicholas and Brendan.

Kaor, Paul!

I can see why St. Brendan had associations with the sea, but I had not known that was also true of Sts. Nicholas and Elmo. I will be looking up the latter two!
