Ragnarok

Satan's World.

See "References To The Norse Myths In The Technic History," here.

And here is another:

"Hanging in space, Falkayn and Chee Lan took measurements of Ragnarok." (XI, p. 443)

What they see is the surface of the rogue planet, Satan, as it orbits close around Beta Crucis:

dissolving cryosphere
glaciers become torrents
torrents boiling into stormwinds
melting lakes and seas
shifting global pressures
upset isostatic balance
readjusting strata
changing allotropic structure
melting rocks
quakes
thousands of volcanoes
geysers
blizzard
hail
rain
tempests -

- environmental violence

Kaor, Paul!

Wait, MELTING lakes and seas? That doesn't seem right. BOILING lakes and seas would make more sense, I think.

"Environmental violence"? I agree, and fascinating to watch, from a safe distance.

Sean,
But they were melting from frozen, then they would boil.

You are right! I should have remembered how DEEPLY frozen the rogue planet had become from megayears of wandering in interstellar space. First melting, THEN boiling.

This is as good a place as any to announce how pleased I am to finally get a copy of S.M. Stirling's THEATER OF SPIES! Looking forward to reading this book!

Kaor, Keith!

Thanks! I will google what Wiki says about "rogue planets." Altho I thought SATAN'S WORLD depiction of such a phenomenon was quite comprehensive.

Kaor, Keith!

Unlike so many other writers, Poul Anderson could make you FEEL you were at the locations and places he described so well!
