The Hotel Universe (scroll down) is a major setting in Satan's World and Mirkheim. During a Polesotechnic League Council meeting in Lunograd, Nicholas van Rijn of Solar Spice & Liquors entertains Bayard Story of Galactic Developments and the Seven in Space and Hanny Lennart of Global Cybernetics and the Home Companies in his suite at the Hotel. Story is a director of Galactic Developments. Lennart is a vice president of Global Cybernetics. Each is the guiding genius of his/her respective cartel. Van Rijn is the natural leader of the independents. Thus, the three most powerful people in the known galaxy?
Story's intelligence system has informed him of van Rijn's belated role in covering up for Supermetals so there is no longer any reason for van Rijn to deny this. Lennart lets slip a remark that informs van Rijn and Story that the Solar Commonwealth government has sent a task force to Mirkheim. Van Rijn does not share Lennart's confidence that the Baburites will back down. (Story knows that they won't.)
Van Rijn:
"'...don't tell lies to a poor old lonely fat man who got one foot in the gravy.'"
-Mirkheim, III, p. 65.
(He is old but still enjoys food.)
"'I wanted we should talk here, not on a circuit with seals...'" (p. 67)
"'My education was in the school of hard knockers...'" (p. 69)
"'...speaking of morals, and immorals too...'" (ibid.)
Note
This coming week, I have social engagements on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, including two days out, so I hope, between today and tomorrow, to fully recover from the remnant of this cold which meanwhile is the reason why I have been housebound and blogging so much for the last three days. We will learn our EU election results this evening.

Kaor, Paul!
It would have been a bit TOO much if we had again seen an Epopoian being knocked over by a Cynthian at the Hotel Universe! (Smiles)
I wonder what exactly Galactic Developments USED to do before it forgot its proper function and became part of a cartel? Engineering, construction, development?
And Hanny Lennart's prim disapproval of Old Nick's robust enjoyment of his food was itself a sign that times were changing, that the flamboyant exuberance of the older merchant princes was getting to be regarded with disapproval.
I had to laugh a bit the idea of Old Nick having one foot in the "gravy"!
I hope you soon get over that cold! And have fun this coming week!
Sean
