Satan's World.
David Falkayn learns about the rogue planet that he will later name "Satan":
rogue planets, from superjovian to asteroidal, outnumber the stars by a thousand or more;
Satan condensed in a primordial nebula when dust, gravel, stones and meteoroids coalesced over million years;
infall, radioactivity and compression released energy, causing earthquakes and volcanoes;
however, in the absence of heat, oceans froze and gases solidified;
"...a Fimbul blizzard..." (III, p. 354) may have lasted for centuries (see Naming A Planet and Ragnarok);
sheathed in ice perhaps older than Earth, Satan would have drifted till the end of time but...

"Satan" might well have wandered endlessly except two things happened: it accidentally warmed when it came close to a star. And this happened at a time when an interstellar civilization was feeling the need for SOME WHERE to safely carry out industrial activities that would damage inhabited or living planets.
