And in Harry Turtledove's HOT WAR series (BOMBS AWAY, FALLOUT, and ARMISTICE) we see the Cold War becoming NUCLEAR hot after President Truman nuked China for interfering in the Korean War and Stalin deciding he would lose too much face if he sat still for that. And suddenly the Korean War became WW III! That would make for nine different and possible time lines.
