I always thought those motorcycles with knee-steering were an ingenious solution to the problem of how to fight from a machine that needs to be constantly steered.

If you're fighting on horseback, you can (with a well-trained horse) provide all the guidance needed with knees and balance. This gives the motorcycle rider the same advantage -- necessary on a planet where the motorcycle has replaced the horse for nomadic warriors.
