Dahut, VII.
(Gratillonius on Maldunilis: "...this bulk that he held could belong to any fishwife." (1, p. 123))
Gratillonius kills the first challenger but is knocked unconscious. A second Frank strikes the Challenge Shield. Gratillonius, roused by Dahut's Touch, rallies the men of Ys and leads them against the Frankish camp at night. Mithras visibly fights with Ys. The second challenger and many others are killed and the rest flee. The Council is persuaded that this was the lesser evil. Problem solved. For now. But there must have been Roman collusion with the Franks who came just when most Ysan defenders had been called elsewhere.
Gratillonius continues to be the best possible King of Ys while disrespecting the Ysan Gods. This conflict will climax at the conclusion of the current volume.

Kaor, Paul!
Alternately, Soren Cartagi and those who thought like him, could secretly find challengers to fight Gratillonius. As had happened before when a King made too many enemies in Ys.
Ad astra! Sean
