Gatto

The Game of Empire, CHAPTER SEVEN.

Lieutenant General Cesare Gatto, Imperial Marine Corps, commanding in the Patrician System in the absence of Admiral Sir Olaf Magnusson, asks Diana Crowfeather:

"'What is your attitude toward the succession crisis?'" (p. 272)

What succession crisis? Emperor Gerhart has an heir, Crown Prince Karl. However, Gatto supports the pretender, Magnusson. An attempted usurpation is euphemised as a "succession crisis"! Let's realistically acknowledge that there is a crisis, having instigated it. Gatto also says both that he believes that Sir Olaf will provide a better government and that it is not his own business to express political opinions! Maybe marines need some training in logic.

Daedalus in the Patrician System is Naval sector headquarters but for which sector?

Kaor, Paul!

I agree, by supporting Magnusson, Lt. Gen. Gatto has expressed a political opinion. The real question is whether Gatto was right to do so. IMO, he was not. As you said Emperor Gerhart had an heir, Crown Prince Karl. And, while Gerhart was not popular, neither was he such a terribly bad Emperor, being in fact both shrewd and able.
