Daven Laure And The Kirkasanters

Poul Anderson, "Starfog" IN Anderson, Flandry's Legacy (Riverdale, NY, 2012), pp. 709-794.

Dominic Flandry is long forgotten by the time of "Starfog." However, various events embody his legacy, nevertheless.

Kirkasanters arrive from unknown space on the frontier planet, Serieve;

a semanticist interviews them;

a linguistic computer analyses their language;

a courier takes cylinders encoding Kirkasanter vocabulary, grammar and reconstructed worldview to Sector HQ;

while Ranger Daven Laure travels to Serieve, the language is reencoded into his neurones;

Laure listens to the recording of a Kirkasanter woman stating that they have traveled from another universe;

he asks his ship's computer to display the Serievan translation of her statement on screen;

he has understood her correctly.

Another universe?

It’s a restatement of the old proverb about the three blind men trying to describe an elephant. Or the way theories of planetary system formation went before we could detect extrasolar planets.

Kaor, Paul!

As so often, Mr. Stirling's comment was pithier than anything I would have thought of! The thought I had was that the Kirkasanters view of cosmology needed correcting and updating.

Ad astra! Sean
