Operation Luna: Miscellaneous

Operation Luna.

OK. Some miscellaneous notes taken while rereading Operation Luna.

"...a rugged twin-sprite four-seat carpet with an outsize coffer at the rear..." is described as a "...Landlouper..." (6, p. 56) - the goetic equivalent of a Landrover? Its driver spells a windfield and a cloudlet for shade. (p. 57) Yes, otherwise it would be uncomfortable to travel on a flying carpet.

"He'd taken sightings with compass, goniometer, and plumb bob." (7, p. 67)

(I think that I know what some words or phrases mean until I am asked.)

"'Shen - I think... [also here]
"'Possibly accompanied by some kind of o-bake...'" (p. 68)

There are Old Shen in Poul Anderson's Technic History.

"...Shining Knife had evoked local HQ on the annular phone and was reporting in Middle Sumerian. It's been reconstructed by tablet animation techniques, but is still obscure enough that hardly anybody knows it..." (p. 70)

I would like to know how annular phones and tablet animation techniques work.

The Chinese want to be the first in space. The Russians are way behind:

"'...with that huge religious revival of theirs they'll be content to orbit a few ikons.'" (p. 61)

I know what an icon is but it is always worthwhile to check details, especially now that it is so easy to cast a spell/google.

Kaor, Paul!

I did take note of "goniometer." And I remembered how Anderson used "Shen" in SATAN'S WORLD.

Strictly, all Christian religious images are "icons," whether "written" (painted) or carved.

Ad astra! Sean
