Conflicts

Mirkheim.

David Falkayn tells Eric Tamarin:

"'I believe if you think over what we've done in the past, you'll agree we aren't such dreadful villains.'
"The miners on Mirkheim. Their high-flying hopes.
"Eric nodded." (XII, p. 179)

As in real life, not everything is as smooth or as simple as it seems on the surface. Those miners were on Mirkheim because of Falkayn but only after some conflict with van Rijn. And another potential conflict of interests or loyalties immediately presents itself. Eric must tell David that his older brother, Michael, is dead. David is now the Falkayn. He tells his grandfather-in-law:

"'You realize what this means, don't you, Gunung Tuan?...I'm the new head of the family and president of the domain. That's where my first duty lies.'" (p. 180)

Fortunately for the future of freedom, this Falkayn will not be bound by that duty forever.

Kaor, Paul!

If Admiral Falkayn, who was also President of the Falkayn domain, had married and left children, his brother David would have only needed to be regent of the domain for a relatively short time till the heir came of age (assuming that heir was still a minor). Or their mother could have been the one to temporarily take over.

Kaor, Paul!

Because your blog pieces are worth responding to! I try to find something to comment about what you wrote in this or that piece.

I hope Ketlan is as well as we can hope for!
