A Three Way Comparison

Comparing three works by Poul Anderson:

"The Sensitive Man," the third installment of The Psychotechnic History;

Planet Of No Return;

The Avatar.

In "The Sensitive Man," psychotechnicians plan to control the future of mankind;

in Planet Of No Return, psychocrats plan to control the future of mankind and conspire to prevent interstellar travel;

in The Avatar, a political clique conspires to prevent interstellar travel, exactly paralleling the conspiracy in Planet Of No Return.

Thus, two overlapping themes. Neat? Not half! More later!

Kaor, Paul!

And, as we know from a Note included by Anderson with the Pyschotechnic stoties, he eventually became VERY dissatisfied with that series. I suspect, if Anderson had drastically rewritten "The Sensitive Man," the conclusion of that story would have been more like what we saw in QUESTION AND ANSWER and THE AVATAR. That is, the UN-man might have come to believe he was serving the wrong cause.
