In Poul Anderson's The Avatar, there is life on a pulsar. In his Starfarers, there is also a pulsar. However, in this novel, interstellar explorers receive messages from intelligent life composed not of mass, molecules, atoms or nuclei but of quantum states among the virtual particles in the vacuum of the changeable space-time near a black hole. Life is information. Quantum states can carry information as well as or better than masses. And I am going out. Back here later.
