(The image advertises different Starfarers.)
Starfarers, 44.Arods have temples whereas Seladorians have communion houses. Seladorians retain and reintroduce natural cultivation whereas Arods want to maintain mechanized food production.
Selador was a son of a Kithman. The Seladorian evangelist, Houer Kernaldi, is a Kith convert. Two solid future historical background references.
Seladorianism:
existence is one and culminates in life;
life will evolve to identity with the Ultimate which realizes itself through life;
human beings have adapted themselves to technology instead of adapting it to the Meaning;
thus, "'They've cut themselves off from the living world.'" (p. 422);
persisting in this, they will become irrelevant to the Meaning or even threaten it;
this will lead to misery and extinction;
Selador wanted to prevent this.
Seladorian terms with the same meaning in different languages:
Atman
Entelechy
Ultimate Motive
Meaning
In this chapter, the omnipotent narrator tells us what the viewpoint character, Panthos, experiences and thinks. However, we are abruptly told that he neither hears a rifle shot nor feels the shot penetrate his skull. Thereafter, the narration becomes objective unless the viewpoint character becomes Panthos' paceman who orders:
"'Hold fire!'" (p. 425)
- and reflects:
"No telling exactly where...the sniper lurked..." (ibid.)
Generations after Selador, Houer Kernaldi has explained Seladorianism to Panthos and thus to us. The history that now incorporates Seladorianism as well as Kith and Envoy continues.

Kaor, Paul!
I find Seladorianism disappointingly thin gruel. I see nothing in it that would move the minds and hearts as Christianity has done for untold millions of people over the past 2000 years. It would have been more interesting and plausible if Anderson had shown us the Catholic Church still being as active and influential 11,000 years from now as it is today. And which I believe is going to be the case.

"Seladorians retain and reintroduce natural cultivation whereas Arods want to maintain mechanized food production....

I can easily imagine schisms & purity spirals within Seladorianism over where to draw the line, on what counts as insufficiently natural.
See this radio show for discussion of work on two potential advances in food production

(scroll well down the page to the section on hacking photosynthesis)
One group was looking at how to optimize photosynthesis & found that existing plants are optimized to the CO2 levels of the geologically recent glacial periods (about 200 ppm), and that optimizing for current CO2 levels of over 400 ppm would increase efficiency of photosynthesis from the current roughly 1% to about 2%.
The other group was looking at electrochemistry to make acetate from CO2 & have modified plants to turn that into humanly edible food. Essentially any source of electricity could be used for food production.
Turn recent furors over GMO crops & dial it up to eleven. ;)
Kaor, Jim!
I agree, we need "industrialized" agriculture if we want a high tech civilization. I have no use or patience for Luddite anti-GMO nonsense. And I love the examples you cited of how food production can or might be drastically increased.

Besides which, the 'living world' is a network of things killing and eating each other; even plants do that, just more slowly.
Kaor, Mr. Stirling!
Absolutely! There is no such thing as total peace and tranquility. The Law of the Jungle rules, red in tooth and claw. It's relatively peaceful for humans only because we happen to be at the top of the food chain! (Snorts)
Ad astra! Sean
Yeah, pigs would probably not call the present "peaceful"... 8-).
Kaor, Mr. Stirling!
Ha! That's for sure!
