A Tahirian can detect a single photon or electron transition and can intuit meanings in messages from the quantum intelligences. Human beings formulate messages to the quantum beings because they are better at abstract thought and have developed mathematics further. The two species develop a hybrid code that is:
"...heavily mathematical and graphical..." (p. 390)
Messages from the quantum beings become four-dimensional, changing objects depicted from different angles, and would then have become non-Euclidean and incomprehensible if computers had not developed appropriate equations. Dayan thinks that these beings directly experience phase spaces and Riemannian spaces and perceive tensors as objects.
Quantum life is patterns in quasi-stable quantum states in the matter vortex and magnetic field around a black hole where uncertainty generates mutations. The life is one but differentiates. Its action to change its states manifests:
"...as electronic, photonic and nuclear events." (p. 394)
It cannot be made any clearer than that.

I certainly cannot claim to understand the idea of quantum intelligent beings, but it is fascinating! I also wonder if non-corporeal beings like the angels could be understood as being quantum beings?
Mention was made in STARFARERS that humans can nearly see single photons.
