Roma Mater.
A long novel or, in this case, a Tetralogy introduces a vast cast of characters, then presents interactions between individuals. Thus:
Queen Quinipilis in conversation with King Gratillonius;
Queen Lanarvilis with Soren Cartegis, Speaker for Taranis;
Queen Dahilis with Gratillonius;
etc.
The nine Queens are high priestesses of Belisama.
The King is the incarnation of Taranis.
The remaining Ysan deity is Lir and Hannon Baltisi is Lir Captain.
Gratillonius is a votary of Mithras and is the prefect of the Roman Empire which has sent a Christian minister, Eucherius, to Ys.
And there are many more, of course.
