Empires

Poul and Karen Anderson's The King of Ys comprises four long novels set during the decline of the Roman Empire. Poul Anderson's History of Technic Civilization is a forty-three-instalment future history series covering the rise and decline of the Polesotechnic League, then of the Terran Empire, then the rise of later, vaster interstellar civilizations. Poul Anderson's Time Patrol guards human history, including every stage of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.

In both the past and the future, Imperial decline involves civil wars between rival claimants to the Imperial throne. In the Roman Empire, Gratillonius backs Maximus. In the Terran Empire, Dominic Flandry defends legitimacy, therefore opposes McCormac, but eventually supports the usurper, Molitor.

Once again, we appreciate the elaborate structure of the Technic History:

2 Polesotechnic League collections
2 PL novels
1 proposed collection of 3 short stories that would fit here
1 Ythrian novel
1 omnibus Ythrian-PL collection
9 Flandry period volumes
1 collection of 4 post-Flandry/post-Imperial instalments

Kaor, Paul!

And this history, both real and fictional, was so contingent and accidental! There might not have been a Roman Empire if Augustus had not lived and had the genius and TIME to found the Principate. And all that followed from that.

And what if Manuel Argos, during the anarchy of the Troubles, had not lived and been inspired by the example of Rome to found the Terran Empire? Technic civilization would have fallen far sooner!

Ad astra! Sean
