What bothers me about the problem faced by the Domrath is that, at most, they have barely more than eight months for not hibernating. That severely limits the time available for doing more than surviving the long Talwinian winters. At the time of Flandry's captivity there the Domrath were still at an Old Stone Age level of tech/culture after untold thousands of years. Will they ever escape the need to hibernate?
